THE BURDEN OF OBESITY
THE BURDEN OF OBESITY
If you're obese, evidence says you're at an increased risk for developing serious health problems down the road even if you're healthy right now.
Obesity is a condition in which fat accumulates in the body to point where it is a risk factor or marker for a number of chronic diseases, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and cancer and has adverse effects on overall health.
Body mass index(BMI) calculated as weight in kilogram(kg) divided by height in metere squared,is one of the most commonly used screening tools to measure and characterize obesity.
A BMI of 25 to <30kg/m2 is defined as overnight and BMI ≥ 30kg/m2 is classified as obese.
In 2014,more than 2.1billion people, nearly 30% of the global population were overweight or obese and 5% of the deaths worldwide were attributable to obesity. If the incidence continues at this rate, almost half of the world's adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030.
