The news caption above is just one of the several recent stories of individuals who have succumbed to defeat from mental struggles they had to go through.
Your mental health is inseparable from your physical health.Though both sexes are affected,it is astounding that stigmatization still envelops men who dare to talk about their mental struggles. As we enter into the Mental Health Awareness Month this May,we hope to change that.
Men who give a hint on the mental issues they are going through are considered as weak, inferior, flawed and damaged guys.Instead of affording a fellow man compassion,we mock belittle and turn a blind eye.We effortlessly spew out the phrase"Man up" as if your gender alone is sufficient armor against this dark and lonesome valley.
Mind if I share some statistics...............
1. 9% of men experience depression on a daily basis(That's more than 6 million men)
2. More than 3million men struggle with anxiety daily
3.Of the 3million people diagnosed as schizophrenic by the age of 30,more than 90% are men.
4.One out of every five men will develop an alcohol dependency during his life.
The stats above are not local data, as perhaps you may have guessed, because the level of stigmatization of people with mental health issues in places like Africa is appalling. However it sheds some light on the burden of the condition.
This macho attitude of stuffing your feelings down or ignoring them is antiquated and downright dangerous.
Our mental problems are literally killing us .And that's got to stop.
IT'S OK TO NOT HAVE YOUR ACTS TOGETHER
IT'S OK TO FEEL LOW
IT'S OK TO FEEL OVERWHELMED
IT'S OK TO FEEL SAD
IT'S OK TO BE SCARED
IT'S OK TO NOT HAVE EVERYTHING FIGURED OUT
IT'S OK TO FEEL A WAVE OF UNCERTAINTY COME CRASHING OVER YOU
These are perfectly normal feelings that every man experiences. And it's ok to talk about it.
WHAT'S NOT OK IS SUFFERING IN SILENCE.
This month,I'll be bringing you a number of fantastic pieces and features on aspects of mental health for both men and women.
Together, our voices can fight the stigma surrounding mental health issues. In doing so we can usher in a positive conversation to replace the longstanding, detrimental silence.
